Personal one - Steve Baccon interview
How would you describe your style or approach to photography? My approach to photography is simple. Simple lighting and clean compositions. I try and get real
engagement with the subject and viewer.
When did you first hear about this exhibition?
I have known and loved being involved with this exhibition for a long time. I am glad that is still continues
on today.
Steve Baccon
“ It is a tough road these days but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for it.
Is this your first time participating, or have you been part of it before? I have been a contributor to the group show for a few years now.
If you’ve attended in past years, what’s your strongest memory of the exhibition?
No particular memories just that it is always good to see friends and colleagues there on the night. And obviously some amazing imagery.
What does it mean to you personally to be part of this collective exhibition?
It means a lot to see your work printed and on show. It never gets old especially in the time of social media and mass consumption of images, we need to stand and stare at an image for more than 15 seconds.
What do you hope audiences will take away from experiencing your work here?
I hope they feel happy and calm when they see my work.
“ My approach to photography is simple. Simple lighting and clean compositions.
How do you see the photography scene today, especially with younger generations coming through? It is a tough road these days but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for it. There are so many new tools available as well as the traditional photographic ones.
What projects have you been working on recently (If you can tell)?
I have been working on a surfboard shaping project for the last 15 years, trying to get it published. Such a large body of work.
Looking back, is there a past project you consider a milestone or turning point
in your career? There have been a few, shooting for BILLABONG has been amazing and has taken me all over the place.
Advertising has its moments of bliss too.
I think the thing I enjoy the most about my job is the people, the people I work with, for and shoot.
How has your photography evolved from when you first started until today?
My photography these days is much more concise and simple. It has evolved to a simpler form.
What inspires you right now—whether in photography or beyond?
I work with a few cinematographers who inspire me and show me ways I never thought about working before. The crews they work with and the collaborative way they do things.
What equipment are you currently using, and why?
I am using NIKON camera system as I love the colour profile and image quality.
How does your gear shape your process or the kind of results you aim for?
My equipment allows me to capture those in between moments, you know, the real ones.
Is there a photographer, work, or experience that has been especially influential in your path?
I love the travel side of my work, so the new experiences have been influential. I am always inspired by other photographers work. Anything can give you inspiration.
What advice would you give to amateur photographers visiting the exhibition?
Just get moving and do it, don’t waste a second.
