Personal one - Steve Greenaway interview
Could you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your journey as a photographer? I’ve been shooting for 25 years now, first in the UK and now in Australia.
I feel blessed that my early passion for photography has also sustained me financially, as well as being a creative outlet. It’s crazy how technology has changed since I started, but, I love that the essence of capturing a single moment in 1/60 of a second remains.
How would you describe your style or approach to photography? I’m all about creating a narrative, and trying to capture as much in camera as possible.
When did you first hear about this exhibition? I’m so pleased Lunar is continuing to keep the annual Personal Exhibition tradition going.
“ I love that the essence of capturing a single moment in 1/60 of a second remains
Is this your first time participating, or have you been part of it before? No, I have been part of This Time It’s Personal for a few years.
If you’ve attended in past years, what’s your strongest memory of the
exhibition? The opening night was always a great evening... catching up with old friends and seeing what inspires other photographers.
How did it feel to see all the works displayed together on the wall in past
editions? It’s like a sneak peak into the creative brain of lots of people all at once!
What does it mean to you personally to be part of this collective exhibition? It’s always good to be part of something creative, and if it raises money for charity along the way, even better!
What do you hope audiences will take away from experiencing your work
here? Mostly I hope they take away the prints :)
“ I used to think that more was better.. Now I prefer to simplify and slow down the process
How do you see the photography scene today, especially with younger
generations coming through? It’s fast moving and disruptive. The cream will always rise to the top.
Has the exhibition influenced or inspired your perspective on photography in
any way? It definitely inspires me to push my personal work more.
Looking back, is there a past project you consider a milestone or turning point
in your career? Not a particular job, but there are people that I have worked with that have been pivotal to my career.
How has your photography evolved from when you first started until today?
I used to think that more was better.. more lights, more assistants on set, more images shot. Now I prefer to simplify and slow down the process.
What inspires you right now—whether in photography or beyond? Good question.. I’m searching for something right now.. when I find it, I’ll let you know.
What equipment are you currently using, and why? Currently I shoot with my Phase One or Sony. Lighting is Profto or Aputure. Ease of use and durability.
How does your gear shape your process or the kind of results you aim for?The simpler the better. I like big dials on my cameras, prime lenses and bomb proof lighting.
Is there a photographer, work, or experience that has been especially influential in your path? Hitchcock movies, and going to work with my Dad - he was set builder at the BBC. Going to work with him was like entering another world.
What advice would you give to amateur photographers visiting the exhibition?
Nothing good comes easy.
Anything you want to add? Just to say thank you.
